EQ REVIEWS: Mortdecai.

Johnny Depp returns to the screen as yet another eccentric character as he usually does with Tim Burton, this time with writer David Koepp in his film, "Mortdecai". While Depp is a genius at pulling off the strange characters, the shtick gets a bit repetitive after a few films. There was honestly a good film buried in this one, it just never found its way to the surface. Depp shows promise as Charlie Mortdecai in both his mannerisms and facial expressions alone, the script just wouldn't let his character break out of its one note mold. The film has a flew laughs where the comedy was subtle, but all to often the film veers into slapstick and cartoon territory which would have been fine if they were going for that British humor vibe, but instead the comedy was all over the place. All other characters were one noted as well and easily forgettable with the exception of Mortdecai's servant Jock, played by Paul Bettany. Bettany steals almost every scene he's in and makes up for most of the laughs in the film. Overall, it was a missed opportunity for everyone involved, which is a shame especially with all the talent. This wasn't a horrible film at all, it just wasn't that good. D+.
