Review of Mortal Kombat (2021) by Skeletorone — 30 Apr 2021
Mortal Kombat starts out strong by actually introducing the audience to the feud between SubZero and Scorpion. The introductions of the other characters are also well done but the writers decided to go with an original character named Cole that wasn't seen before in any MK game.
That fell flat. The character of Cole is rather bland, especially considering the fact that he is the descendant of such an iconic character as Scorpion. The fight scenes are a mixed bag. While they went all out on the gore, which is good and simply fits the franchise, the fighting feels too much like something we would see in a Marvel super hero movie.
While some direct references to the games work rather well, others went way overboard. It gets just a bit too goofy when the fighters take the role of the MK game announcer and say "Fatalaty!" or "Flawless Victory!" multiple times during the movie.
Overall, I would rate the movie as okay. It's watchable, it's entertaining, but it's nothing special.
