Review of Mortal Kombat (2021) by Compi24 — 15 May 2021
Elevated by some inspired fight choreography and a couple great evocations in the form of Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero and Josh Lawson as Kano, director Simon McQuoid's 2021 adaptation of the "Mortal Kombat" franchise may leave a lot to be desired in terms of tonal consistency and characterization, but I suppose that's nothing a little shock value can't buff out.
Make no mistake, the movie makes some pretty woeful mistakes, namely not including any sort of tournament element in the plot and trying to explain away why certain characters have laser vision/can control ice/grow cybernetic arms(?), but I suppose I'm not really here for anything other than seeing characters fighting.
The movie at least has fights - and some pretty good ones, at that. I only wish that potential future installments bring more of the game's spirit into the fold and onto those eye-catching exercises in set piece design.
