Review of Mortal Kombat (1995) by Zak S — 20 Dec 2011
This film is cheesy, the acting is poor at times, the story is nothing special, but I love this movie. This is one of those movies I watched as a kid all the time because for me it was AWESOME, today it still holds up surprisingly well.
I don't really ask for much in the way of plot but it manages to construct a straightforward plot that didn't really have me asking many questions or trying to find plot holes, one of this movie's best qualities is the atmosphere it provides, I can't quite put my finger on it but it has a strange, unique, and very mystical atmosphere that I have yet to see replicated in other films.
To me this movie is a real treat, it's a lot of fun to watch for action movie goers, and on many level's very impressive as a martial arts film. I regard the Liu Kang vs Reptile fight to be one of the best, and most inventive martial arts fights I've ever seen.
It was my favorite fight as a kid and looking back on it as an adult and critic, it's a hell of a lot more impressive than I remember. This movie is a pure 4 star for me, it's not perfect, but if I gave it anything more or less than 4 stars I'd feel bad about myself.
