Review of Mortal Kombat (1995) by Grant H — 27 May 2015
Very good movie (but also very bad). This adaptation of the classic video game is very cheesy, funny, and both well-made and horribly made at the same time. Half the visual effects look great, and half of them look terrible, but all fit well for the movie.
The plot is almost non-existent, just like the video games. The fighting scenes are stylish and well-done, the script is poorly written (which is to be expected), the direction is solid, and the performances are so-so, the best being Ashby and Shou.
One way to truly improve this film would've been to make it R-rated.
