Review of Mortal Kombat (1995) by Jc E — 31 Jul 2010
Bad...wasn't a fan of Mortal Kombat back in the day, and that hasn't changed. Honestly, there wasn't really any place they could take this film...it has the opposite problem of most video game-based movies.
Most of those adaptations could be really cool, but the writers often avoid sticking to the game's storyline, and thus, fuck up a good, provided direction in which the movie could travel. This film, on the other hand, shouldn't have been made.
..not because the end result was terrible, but because there wasn't any basic storyline to utilize...the plot of the Mortal Kombat games is so basic, it doesn't leave anything to expand upon, or take anywhere.
That aside, a lot of other stuff is wrong with this film...while I think Christopher Lambert is pretty good as Rayden (Lambert is clearly the best part of this film), Linden Ashby, who plays Johnny Cage is not only annoying in general, but his one-liners are absolutely horrible and ruin several scenes.
