Review of Mortal Kombat (1995) by John W — 27 Mar 2011
Despite what critics think, I personally would say that in comparison to the other Video game based movies I've seen, this is the most decent one. Other video game based movies I've seen (E.G. Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter and Doom) did thier respective games absolutely no justice. Mortal Kombat is the clear exception, it follows the story of the game very accurately (thought not 100%) but still very close. The Martial Art scenes were done very nicely as well (I mean *real* martial art scenes not that thin cable garbage from The Matrix). Chritsopher Lambert did a good job with Raiden and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa played a very good Shang Tsung as well.
But this is not a movie without weaknesses. The writers of the movie made Liu Kang a self-doubting person (which wasn't true in the game's story) but Robin Shou did that part good nonetheless.
