Review of Morning Glory (2010) by William L — 11 May 2011
Rachel McAdams gives it her all, but it's one of those instances of a movie "trying way too hard"... given the amazing cast, etc, it seems that everyone was expecting comic gold, when in fact everyone ends up relying on their "baggage" from previous legendary roles to fill in the gaps.
.. We've seen Diane Keaton and Harrison Ford play these types before; and better... they are still good, but the tone is off... usually its okay for an audience if your a likable jerk, or comically bitchy but the charm isn't there.
..remove the likable and the comic, and you have the battle of bitterness... Patrick Wilson is consigned to be the "love interest guy" - sort of a feminist version of the stereotypical "love interest girl" - he's good looking, nice, and kinda floats in an out of the picture, care-free and happy-go-lucky, depending on when Rachel McAdams needs to grow or change.
.. seeing this makes me realize that too many "girlfriend roles" are similarly stereotyped...and these are the types of thoughts you don't want to be having when watching a movie. Jeff Goldblum's cameo as "the Boss" rounds out this wonderful cast that wasn't used to their full potential.
Still, if you like the premise and you like these actors, then there is probably enough entertainment value for you to at least check it out.
