Review of Morning Glory (2010) by Aleksandar K — 07 Dec 2011
It's okay thanks mostly to the unbearable cuteness of Rachel McAdams. She (mostly) lights up her scenes as the workaholic motor-mouth, Becky. She has been fired from a job with one morning show in favor of a more educated and experienced guy. She goes on the rampage searching for a new producer position and is eventually hired to be the new executive producer for ailing morning show, Daybreak. What she lacks in experience and education she makes up for in dogged determination and a belief in herself and her own abilities. When her boss, Jerry, warns her Daybreak is about to go belly-up, Becky's got a limited amount of time to get the ratings up before the show is cancelled and pulls out all the stops to keep herself and her coworkers in a job.
The movie's filled with colorful characters and personalities. Diane Keaton kind of hams it up and overacts as the high-strung Colleen, and Harrison Ford grumbles and grouches his way through the movie as the arrogant new cohost, Mike. Patrick Wilson is non-existent, dispensable and unnecessary as the obligatory love interest, Adam. Their relationship is under-developed. It is merely a footnote. I would like to tell Hollywood that not every movie *has* to have a romance, especially if it's done poorly and doesn't do a whole lot for the plot or the main character. Becky doesn't change as a result of getting to know the more laid back Adam. Neither of them change, for that matter, so what's the point?
I've seen better behind-the-scenes movies. Not even Rachel McAdams could save this. Skip it.
