Review of Moonstruck (1987) by Eugene B — 29 Mar 2008
I know that actors hate being identified with just one role - they want to be accepted for the artists that they are (or can be, at times). Take the famous stories about how much Tina Louise resents Ginger Grant. I have heard about lots of actors that go through that (I hear that sometimes Patrick Stewart won't even talk about Star Trek). I'm sorry they feel this way because I think you should be proud of every character you create (well, except for Faye Dunaway and Mommie Dearest - but look at the joy she has brought millions of people with that bad performance!).
This is Cher's masterpiece. Oh, yeah, she's a wonderful actor and she has played lots of great characters in films we have seen and loved. It doesn't change the fact that this is her baby. She deserved the Oscar for this breathtaking performance.
For years I didn't get Nic Cage's work in this movie. Finally, a few years ago, I was watching it (I had been living in NYC for about a decade at this point) and I said "OH! I GET it now!".
Great New York actors, guys! Olympia, Vincent, Danny, Anita Gillette (!) and a host of other gorgeous local talent that needs to be remembered, always.
This movie is simply one of the best.
