Review of Moonstruck (1987) by Chance F — 18 Feb 2010
This is one of those movies that I disagree entirely with the Academy. There was nothing spectacular about this movie at all. It was just another romantic comedy with nothing defining about it.
There wasn't even anything great about the screenplay, which for some reason won Best Original Screenplay in 1987.
There was nothing phenomenal about Cher's performance; so, why she won Best Actress, I have no idea. I'm not saying she was bad, but I just don't know how the Academy could have preferred her to Glenn Close in "Fatal Attraction" or Meryl Streep in "Ironweed".
Nicolas Cage was horrible. I don't know what was with the voice he was doing; it sounded to me like he was doing a poor imitation of Marlon Brando in "The Godfather". And then the way he delivered his lines was just awful.
What I really can't believe is that this was even nominated for Best Picture. Don't get me wrong, it was a good movie, but in a way that "Sleepless in Seattle" and "City of Angels" are good movies. It's just not Best Picture quality.
