Review of Moonrise Kingdom (2012) by Jeremy S — 13 Jul 2013
After much speculation, I've made up my mind: this is Anderson's greatest work to date, or at least his best since "The Royal Tenenbaums," his venture into animation not counted this time.
Latest efforts (Darjeeling Ltd., Life Aquatic) didn't match up to his early endeavors "Rushmore" or "Tenenbaums", as much as they tried (and they really, really tried...that's where they went wrong, in fact).
"Moonrise" brings Anderson back to his roots, with a quirky coming-of-age premise and a lovable, unusual cast of characters who make it unique. Like any great Anderson film, it is not just idiosyncratic in a signature way, but also very touching without trying to milk any emotion.
Among his top 3 films, and a definite must watch for anybody who "gets" him.
