Review of Moonrise Kingdom (2012) by Samuel H — 07 Jul 2014

Sweet, superb and cinematically stunning, Wes Anderson is king of the modern shady (yet colourfully shady) comedy. Thanks to underplayed child performances and Anderson's trademark attention to detail, Moonrise Kingdom manages to conjure up a real air of childlike wonder, dream and sincerity, complimented beautifully by the auteur's fleeting waves of wry wit.

Innocence, adventure and romance are all handled so briskly and brusquely to work as both entertainment and statement film, whilst darting pans and swooping stills set across a vibrant pastel palette ensure the whole thing looks gorgeous throughout. One can't help but imagine that Anderson himself lived a similar, goggle-eyed childhood. Beautifully funny stuff.
