Review of Moonrise Kingdom (2012) by Bivo M — 14 Dec 2015
Panning from one whimsical diorama to another to find: a very particular type of plaid, a square framed chimney, a supply of blue eye shadow, a coonskin hat, a pair of fishhook and beetle earrings, a Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra Benjamin Britten record, a portable record player, a handful of batteries, a bugle horn, a Swiss army knife, a pair of lefty scissors, a scene in slow-motion, a pair of binoculars, a pile of books, a board game, a megaphone, an axe, a bandanna, a cigarette, 76 dollars, a snake-bite kit, an eye patch, a scout master, a mom, a dad, a captain, two beds near, one bed far, a girl, a boy, a kiss, a french kiss, an island police car for secret lovers, a sailboat, a tent, a handful of paintings, a play, a change of heart, a thunderstorm, a flood, an escape, a hunt, a church roof, a rope, a rescue, and a matter-of-fact inventory list. Cut. Cut. Cut. Pan. Cut. Cut. Pan. Cut. Cut. Cut. Pan. Pan. Pan. This film is edited like Morse code, complete with all the Wes Anderson fixins', and compiled as a monument to style. Like the guided music lesson in orchestration from the old Benjamin Britten record, this film highlights all of the bits and bobs that come together to tell an intricate story.
Tagline: The first section is the woodwinds, in which the players blow, and the instruments are made mostly of wood.
