I've got to say, this one seriously tests my oft-stated theory, "There are no truly bad James Bond films." 'Cause this one... it's not so good. The Ultimate Edition DVD set likes to claim that the movies that take the Bond franchise in a completely weird direction (like this one, or LIVE AND LET DIE with its "blaxploitation" theme) somehow proves that the concept remains "fresh and relevant" in a variety of settings. I submit that they actually prove that the filmmakers could be absolutely shameless about trying to shoehorn James Bond into whatever genre seems trendy in any given year.

Although, that kinda cheesy trend-chasing has become part of the character's charm, and I can't really bring myself to dislike even the most transparent attempts to pander. And this movie has its nice moments-- the villain's plan is sinister and complicated, Jaws displays a sense of humor and unexpected compassion, and Holly Goodhead is a strong and capable partner rather than mere love interest to be rescued. So my theory stands-- there are no bad Bond films. Not even when they involve laser fights in outer space.
