Review of Moonraker (1979) by Thomas M — 10 Nov 2013
Based on the story and acting, this movie is a failure. The story is reheated leftovers from the past several adventures, the romance is dead on arrival, and the 52-year-old Moore seems to be hiding a combover at certain angles when not receiving bland orders from his gray, cardboard superiors - "hey, go get that guy.
" But then the staggering art direction and production values fill the screen and I'm willing to swallow a dull raisin engulfed in such a scrumptious cake. Even the ridiculous final act is at least meticulously designed and clearly shot.
These mismatches between professional studio weight and paper-thin storytelling (propped up with campy humor that I appreciate) leads to a failed assignment, but what a beautiful failure it is.
