Review of Moonlight Mile (2002) by Jonathan W — 23 Jun 2004
Watched a couple of "parents mourning the loss of their child" movies yesterday. Moonlight Mile being the first, although I did miss about 15-20 minutes of it while eating lunch. It was good, but I want to see the parts I missed.
Susan Sarandon was good, Jake Gyllenhaal was okay (sorry Horrormoviestar), and Dustin Hoffman was good. I liked the direction by Brad Siberling also (he based much of the movie off his memories of when his fiancee died tragically).
Siberling is directing Lemony Snicket's An Unfortunate Series of Events, scheduled for a December release, so I'll be looking forward to that. I give it a pretty strong thumbs up based on what I saw, but I want to see the rest.
I also saw parts of Robert Redford's Ordinary People, but I missed the first 10 minutes, and just wasn't in the mood to watch it after about the 40 minute mark. It was quite good, reminded me a bit of American Beauty, I just didn't feel like watching it at the time.
Earlier in the night I watched Gattaca for what was probably the 7th or 8th time. It's still a masterpiece to me. I saw a couple of things this time that I hadn't noticed before, like when Vincent wipes his eye and leaves the eyelash in the corridor.
I had never noticed the part where he wipes his eye before. I had a problem or two this time around in thinking about Uma Thurmond's character's motivation and why she stays with Vincent after he suddenly beats the living crap out of that cop outside the restaurant; although that leads to a great scene that follows it.
More relevant today than it was in 1997, and still one of my all time favorite films.
