Barry Jerkins served up the most thickly ironic crying scene since Julianne Moore's breakdown scene in Far From Heaven 14 years ago. It's a sign of greatness, but even though Todd Haynes carried more distance, Jerkins, much like Haynes at that point of time, was too meticulously cerebral that the impression of his manufactured writing does not exactly go away.
