Review of Moonlight (2016) by Shu Shu S — 28 Feb 2017
What's frustrating to me about Moonlight is that the director seems to think I will automatically care about his character - indeed there's only one character in this movie - and therefore makes no effort to build a story that might make me care about The One and Only Character.
This is a dangerous strategy, and for me it backfired entirely. I didn't care, I don't care, I won't care. No story? No caring. That's my negotiation with movies. The ten year old version of The Character didn't have it figured out, the teenager didn't have it figured out, and the adult didn't have it figured out.
And I can't figure out why I paid twelve bucks for this go-nowhere film.
