Review of Moonlight (2016) by Christopher W — 05 Mar 2017
This is a very interesting movie. I didn't know what to expect going into this one. I didn't watch any trailers or reviews and all I knew about it was that a lot of people loved it and it won Oscars. But after watching it I can. say that I do think is pretty good but not great.
It's a very slow movie at the beginning and it stays slow all the way through. It had a lot of interesting subjects and the characters did grow on me by the end but I don't think it was enough for me to like the movie as much as others.
The best things about the movie is it's settings, the cinematography, and the use of colors and lighting throughout. You can tell they paid very much attention to detail all throughout. It's a very great looking film. I thought all the characters were interesting but it didn't have enough dialogue for me to really connect with anyone. I liked Mahershala Ali's character but I don't feel like I got enough of him to make a full connection.
The main character and his mom where the two most fleshed out and by the end I did come to like their stories. But because of how the movie was set up I do feel like there was something missing from them and that the movie just needed something more. But other than that I still kind of liked it. It had a pretty good themes That You Don't See too much in black films set in the hood and I like that it didn't Focus too much on the drug aspect.
In all, I do kinda see why people liked it so much. It's very much the Indie type film that draws right the Oscar voting crowd. And that's not a bad thing but it just wasn't fully my type of film but I still like it for what it is.
