Review of Moonlight (2016) by Gottaloveit — 29 May 2017
Yes, it ain't much happening in this movie but it doesn't have to! This movie isn't about happening a lot but feeling a lot. Deep suffering from the burden of being a gay man in a black community, being lost on the journey to your heart, not knowing the answer to the question "who am I?". The film doesn't just show all this but make you feel it in a very special way.
What makes this movie special is how it so touching without much happening and how it tells so much without showing a lot.
The visuals (especially the light) are as great as the actors and the story. For me there couldn't be an more deserving oscar winner.
But this movie isn't for everyone. If you want a movie which surprises you with it's many plot twists, which shocks you or anything with a high tension, this movie isn't for you.
The plot is predictable, the tempo is slow but the film gives you something different sympathy and empathy for this black homosexual man growing up.
