Review of Moon Child (2003) by Annalyn D — 27 Jan 2009
Unusual and fun, this is an odd movie that escapes being stuck in any time period or genre by virtue of originality. It's absorbing and worth watching for great location shots, beautifully placed, haunting, original music, fantastic attention to sound and style details throughout.
It makes a difference. Also top marks for old-fashioned chiaroscuro -- attention to light and dark. And some wise insights when you least expect them. The actors are quirky and fun, clever in unexpected ways, and generally do a good job.
In its basic conception, this movie was ahead of its time. Subsequent films clearly picked up a few ideas here. Cons: too sentimental and sticky; main storyline far too predictable, and who designed that structure? Choppy edits and the sharp change in tone halfway through unbalance it.
Too bad about that, b/c the artistic merits were so much more sophisticated. It samples predecessors liberally, but in my opinion stays respectful and creative. Misses greatness but is still a compelling watch.
