Moon is a lonely, thinky sci-fi rumination on the meaning of existence as seen through the lens of Sam Bell, a tech completing a three-year contract working on the moon without any (or at least much) human contact.

It is thoughtful, meditative, deliberate, and surprisingly effective in its unexpectedly short delivery, and first-time director Duncan Jones uses his setting, cinematography, and actors to bring across themes and ruminations on loneliness, meaning, purpose, and family in the film's exploration.

Moon feels reminiscent of its genre's predecessors (namely Solaris and 2001) without ever feeling derivative or focused too much on being an homage; it seems perfectly poised as an inheritor of its genre while still presenting something fresh to its viewers.

The main reason for that is the performance of Sam Rockwell as Bell, as he expertly weaves his way through the isolation of his character, the relationship with the computer (perfectly voiced by Kevin Spacey), and the twists that present themselves throughout the story.

Moon is (somewhat ironically) an almost entirely atmospheric experience, and it gives me hope for philosophical science fiction in the future.
