Review of Moolaadé (2004) by Lestat D — 25 Jan 2007
This is Ousmane Sembene's most powerful film. It sheds light on an unjust practice that Muslim women have endured for countless centuries. Female genital mutilation is just another abuse that women have suffered at the hands of their husbands.
And all of this supposedly is written in the Koran. Sembene's shows us that this is just another form of submitting women to their husbands and the rest of the adult males at their villages. It has nothing to do with religion, it's mutilation, plain & simple.
Sometimes it ends up in death. This film aims to educate by reaching a wider audience and open up the world eyes at this abuse. Truly an excellent film by Mr. Sembene.
