Review of Moolaadé (2004) by Ben W — 08 Sep 2008
I'm a bit behind in my movie-watching, so I'm 4 yrs. late in seeing this exceptional film. The main topic is culturally controversial, and one that I hope will cease altogether. The characters may at times seem harsh, particularly to those who have not experienced life in West Africa, however the story line is utterly moving and sure to win your heart over.
It was inevitable that a lot of my focus centered on the way Sembene goes into great detail to accurately depict daily life in a West African village. Apart from being a quality film production with impressive acting to match, I savored every scene that made me relive moments of my own experiences while living in a rural village in the south of Mali.
I'm definitely buying this DVD... it's the perfect visual aide to accompany the verbal description of my year in Mali. I plan to see more of Sembene's past films, and look forward to his next project.
I ni ce !!!
