Review of Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl (1982) by Nat G — 26 Sep 2008
Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl presents some of the Python lads' finest, funniest work. Cut from their four night stand at the Hollywood Bowl in 1980, this film is jam-packed with sketches, songs and a host of their finest gags from their TV series. Sketches include the sexually confused lumberjack, the Ministry of Silly Walks, the Argument Clinic and the exploding balladeer. Some of the group's funnier short-film pieces are featured as well, including the International Philosophy Match (Germany vs. Greece) and Terry Gilliam's animated pieces.
This film is ok but it would have been so much better if I could of been in the crowd, the Americans seem like they don't really know what is going on, which is funny. The sketches don't seem as clean cut as there first showing on TV, and it's a shame they didn't think of new things to do with the characters. Overall there is nothing particularly revelatory about Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl, but for Python fans and fanatics, and they are legion, this won't matter a lot.
