Review of Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) by Michael Troy M — 19 Jul 2012
This was the beginning of the Python movie genre. That's right, I said genre as Monty Python is its own, fantastic, niche in the history of film. There are other examples of loosely connected, segmented comedy movies; but none are as cleverly written, comically performed, and quoted as The Holy Grail.
I first saw it in an old theater and laughed so hard I couldn't eat my popcorn. I vowed to see it again and it is still one of the very few DVD's I own. I was already aware of Monty Python through the legendary series then airing on PBS.
Even though The Meaning of Life is the penultimate Pythonian experience, The Holy Grail is still, after nearly 40 years, the best introduction to the Python catalog. Just remember to avoid ingesting a heavy meal before enjoying it the first time as you may hurt yourself from laughing so much and so hard.
Enjoy!
