Review of Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) by Simon H — 29 Jun 2014
I knew the Monty Python gang were a mad lot but after my first experience with them I never realised how mad. The film is definitely not to be taken seriously. There is a basic plot but that's all you would really find as the film is littered with segments that are just there for the jokes and nothing more. This is what you are watching it for as there are some really well written and funny lines found.
Those familiar with Monty Python will already know what to expect, with all the cast on hand with their multiple characters. Many of the jokes here will already be familiar with anyone who has not seen the film as they are often featured elsewhere, including the coconuts for horses and the famous black knight losing his limbs.
Other than the verbal jokes, there are also some clever little visual techniques on show such as the film burning and joke subtitles. I won't describe them as it ruins the jokes, but I thought the beginning and end of the movie were some of the best jokes in the film.
It's hard to rate a film as it will come across different to everybody who watches it. Is it a well made film? Not particularly but that's not the purpose of it. As long as your happy watching classic British humour with no serious story, then you will love it.
