Review of Monsters vs Aliens (2009) by Ally J — 03 Jul 2012
Maybe it's the fact that I've watched waaay too many animated movies, but this was mediocre. It was awesome that Susan kicked butt, but she desperately needed more of a back story than just being some girl who wanted to marry some selfish news anchor. And the alien needed a better back story than having had destroyed his own planet. Well, maybe we would have heard that back story if he hadn't been conveniently silenced while he was telling it (which only shows that some writers got lazy). It was just one big mesh of randomness and simplification. If the writers spent some more time on this, they might have actually had an interesting story. The pacing was off and, as a critic already said, there was no (or at least, very little) character development.... besides maybe in Susan. Also, like a friend said, this is basically a pointless movie about fighting with a bunch of jokes thrown in.
The only reason I so generously gave this 3 stars was that it a) was animated and b) slightly amused me. Also, it was cool that Hugh Laurie played Dr. Cockroach. But besides that, this movie is really overrated.
And the blue-ish alien with the big head kinda reminds me of Megamind. But Megamind's movie was way cooler.
