Review of Monsters vs Aliens (2009) by Victor M — 04 Dec 2012
With such an sub-par story Monsters Vs. Aliens looked like it was sinking before it had even begun, but putting the abysmal plot aside there is much to like and enjoy. The latest from Dreamworks animation is no Shrek, it balances a few adult gags, but it mostly caters for the children's comedy of the noise variety, with Seth Rogan's B.
O.B. So it throw sa bit of science mumbo jumbo into the mix, but the laughs are pretty much recycled from the better story of 2001's Monster's Inc. The Aliens here are hardly mentioned or seen until the end, and even then there is only one, and a poor villain it is at that.
The main concept here is good, but without a solid foundation for the story it all pretty much reinacts a good cartoon episode you would find on the television. What grated me the most about the film was the animation market now pitching the 3D idea to every picture.
Do they really want us to have a better cinema experience? Of course they don't its just another money-making capitalist idea to add three pounds more to the ticket admission. Even the trailers for future animations were in 3D and this worries me somewhat.
The best part, as I'm sure it was for most people in the film was the character of Insectosaurus a 350ft giant moth type thing which makes funny noises. Its absurd but brilliant appearences had the audience in fits, and it was easily more lovable than that ant-eater look-a-like Reese Witherspoon.
Overall the interesting characters and visuals cannot quite overcome the story which remains the deciding factor in any animations rating. For that Monsters Vs. Aliens is awarded a six, and that is just for insectosaurus himself.
