Review of Monsters University (2013) by Dragonsfoe . — 18 Jul 2014
There was once an animation studio that changed the film industry forever. It's name is Pixar. Award to award they kept on making their movies better and better. Then came Cars 2, which changed the studio's face forever. With Brave Pixar tried to redeem itself but ended up with just a normal good animated movie. But now comes Monsters University. I can say Pixar is back to its former glory but the movie is missing one Pixar element, heart.
The movie follows Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) who was destined for greatness since his childhood. He has been anticipating to going to Monsters University every day till he got there. There he meets the soon to be villain Randy (Steve Buscemi) who was his roommate for a while. Then came Sully (John Goodman) the "best scarer around." Soon something unexpected happens. They both get pulled out of scare school. The only way to get back is to prove Ms. Hardscrabble (Helen Mirren) wrong by competing in the scare games.
Pixar has been climbing back slowly since Cars 2 but with Monsters University Pixar is almost there. For a animated movie this movie would have been the best movie other studios have ever made but in Pixar's case it could do better. On the bright side this is an great animated movie full of fun making it Pixar's funniest movie in a long time. I love how this movie is set in college and how the plot has all those twists and turns. As far as prequels go this is one of the best.
On the negative side this movie needs a little more heart. But mostly because it is missing Boo. The major reason that Monsters Inc. was so successful. But besides that there is really nothing wrong.
This movie is excellent in all ways except one . It reaches the standard in all ways and it is challenging to at least crack a smile. The nods to the sequel are enjoyable but let's say that Pixar is almost redeemed.
Rating: 8.0 (A-).
