Review of Monsters University (2013) by Dan F — 24 Jul 2014
The film is beautiful- the improvement in Pixar's aesthetic in the 12 years since Monsters Inc is breathtaking, and Monsters Inc is not a bad looking film. One particular sequence which sees Mike and Sully enter the human world is outstanding and the most gripping thing since that door hopping finale from the first film.
The rest of it however is a bit lacklustre, content in being simply a child-friendly 80s college movie, but with monsters instead of horny Americans. It's not even a parody, it's just a genre that doesn't really engage children and adults may find the fatigue of that one joke being played out.
Still, it looks great and most younger audience members will enjoy the slapstick and funny looking characters. For the older ones usually rewarded by Pixar's depth, not so much.
