Review of Monsters University (2013) by Dee R — 10 Mar 2014
How "doesn't it scale the heights of Pixar's finest efforts"? I absolutely loved this movie.
I dare say: I almost find this prequel to be more entertaining than the first movie. It seemed like this movie should've came out first and Monsters & Co afterwards.
I found the character "Mike Wazowski" to be alright and enjoyable enough in Monsters & Co, but he really shines in this movie. He has a cute backstory and a relateable personality; you're rooting for the guy all throughout the movie.
When I first saw the trailer, I was expecting a rushed sequel without any real or interesting character developement, where Mike would just be dubbed "loser" for no explained reason, and Sulley would just be the random, popular bully. But I was surprised with a "popular" Sulley, lacking intelligence and motivation, and a "loser" Mike, who is intelligent and determined. I completely missed these personality traits within these characters in the first movie, but when looking back, I'm like "yeah, this is accurate".
The only thing I didn't like is that Randall and Mike didn't really share that much together before Randall crossed the other side and appeared as a "traitor". So really, he didn't appear as a traitor at all, Mike and he were never friends.
