Review of Monsters University (2013) by Karyn S — 21 Jun 2014
This film has something a lot of summer film don't, a grounded center and a heart. It also has something a lot of sequels don't, a cohesive plot that pairs nicely with the original story. In the sequel, we travel back in time to see just how Sully and Mike, now an inseparable pair, became friends in college.
While Mike struggles with trying to impress his professors with his encyclopedic knowledge of scare tactics, Sully remains lackadaisical about studies and relies on his natural talent and charm to get him through.
The film has some heartfelt if somewhat cliche things to say about the power of self reliance and inner strength, and is full of goofy charm reminiscent of a children's version of Animal House. There are many genuine laughs based on awkwardness and the ending is somewhat unexpected, but in a good way.
Recommended for young and old alike.
