Review of Monsters University (2013) by Cameron J — 04 Jan 2015
Better than the first, this movie isn't as lacking in animation as you'd expect. Every frame is filled with color and detail, and the story is full of heart. A family movie made with care and compassion that's never boring. Not the funniest of the Pixar movies, but one of the most uplifting. My only issues with the film are with a few bits of discontinuity with the film it's a prequel to (at the end of "Inc.", they decide to make the kids laugh instead of scaring them, but there's none of that here, it's all scare-the-hell-out-of-these-kids). I think if this one had come first, it would've been called the better of the two by most people. The voice actors are great, though I was confused with them getting Alfred Molina to do an American accent - why get him if we won't recognize him? The direction is great, though; if this were live action it'd still be interesting if it was shot the same way (though only Pixar's animation could bring the delights out of these characters).
The scene at the end where they go into the human world and scare everyone is one of my favorites in Pixar history.
