Review of Monsters: Dark Continent (2014) by Craig F — 03 Jun 2015
First of all, Tom Green (the comedian) did NOT direct this film, so Flixster should fix that.
And second, this film is terrible. The only good thing about the film is the cinematography, and the CG creatures. EVERYTHING else is absolutely, terrible. A waste.
Even though Gareth Edwards's "Monsters" didn't have much of the creatures to show, at least it made sense to have them and they actually, DID something!
THIS movie, however, has NO reason to have these creatures. It's is really, another war film, like the The Hurt Locker, with the monsters thrown in for no reason/purpose. It's a shame, because the CG creatures look pretty decent, and they have cool designs.
But, the script/story and human characters are awful.
The first movie dealt with following the main characters around, while the creatures would show up, when needed to, because it was a survival movie. Surviving a world over-run by non-threatening aliens.
And that's another problem with this sequel, the creatures are not a threat. They don't do anything to harm anyone, so there's no reason to attack them, or have them in this setting. They are just background material, and not the focus. The first film wasn't focused on the monsters either, but at least they were part of the plot.
Anyway, just be prepared to be VERY disappointed, and don't let the previews/trailers for this film fool you. It's another low-budget war film, with wasted CG monster scenes that show-up once in a while, but have NO purpose to the story.
