Review of Monster's Ball (2001) by Jason H — 25 Sep 2008
On the surface one might think this is a movie about a racist man who overcomes this and in a way it is...but in more ways it is so much more. It is a tragic film, so tragic in fact that it is hard to watch at points.
The performances are strong all around from Thonton and Berry and more subtly from Heath Ledger and Peter Boyle. The journey that brings the leads together on the surface looks like something drawn up by a writer of some bad rom-com, but the arcs the characters have is refreshing.
This is not a message movie as far as race go. The messages here is deeper than that. Life is tragic, people change, and most importantly of all...sometimes, people just need each other in general. Great, powerful movie.
