Review of Monster's Ball (2001) by Mikael K — 06 Jun 2009
A quietly thoughtful, subtle to the point of undramatic tale of a neurotic relationship breaking the norms of the community around it. A very pessimistic and hopeless film that won me with its avoidance of romanticism.
This isn't an easy story about love conquering all, but a story of two people using each other to cope with loss and the emptiness of life. "Monster's Ball" reminds us that a culture's tendency to restrict an individual's ethically uncompromised actions is universaly a destructive one.
The motives behind the actions being irrelevant.
