Review of Monster's Ball (2001) by Rusty B — 07 Apr 2010
The complexity behind the fiction of Monster's Ball is oftentimes perplexing. Marc Foster clearly understands that motion pictures are a visual medium, and his directing does an outstanding job maximizing those effects.
At times, the dialogue feels choppy, but the movie flows naturally. And the uncomfortable romance between Billy Bob Thornton and Halle Berry, slowly but surely, makes you slouch in your seat. This film does an excellent job guiding but not directing the viewers' opinion.
Just about everything is left open for interpretation, allowing the purely natural response of discomfort.
