Review of Monsters and Men (2018) by Grayson O — 06 Oct 2018
Monsters and Men, written and directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, is a poetic tale that tackles a critical event that is happening in our front yards today. The film uses a Amores Perros structure to tell the story of three view points involving a tragic police shooting.
John David Washington (Blackkklansman), Kelvin Harrison Jr. (It Comes at Night), and Anthony Ramos (A Star is Born) all lead their respected stories with engaging and provoking storytelling. The directing is confident and fluid with Green knowing what story he wants to tell with each character.
The cinematography is top notch and each feel different from each other, at one moment we could be watching a film by Wong Kar-Wai to another that feels like Sean Bobbit's work on Shame. The acting is top notch with Washington proving more and more that he is a leading man.
This film needs to be seen especially with that is happening today in the United States of America. No matter what your feelings are on the topic, we can't ignore what is happeing. As film is a form of expressionism and that is also freedom of speech everyone NEEDS to see this to start the conversation to bring justice to all lost their lives.
