Review of Monsters (2010) by Steven P — 12 Aug 2011
This is a surprising film in a lot of ways; it begins in such a way that you might expect it to be an action movie, and yet very little actually happens to follow that up. A lot of the drama happens offscreen, at least as far as the extraterrestrial devastation is concerned, and instead we follow two individuals on a treacherous off-road trip.
For a personal journey in which two people who begin with little in common eventually grow to connect with each other, it avoids the slap-slap-kiss clichà (C)s you might expect, though the ultimate resolution of this feels a bit abrupt and slightly unearned.
However, it benefits massively from keeping the aliens in the distance, and the final encounter with them is surprisingly moving. It ends up being a surprisingly enjoyable film despite not an awful lot happening in it.
