Review of Monsters (2010) by Kristina K — 01 Aug 2011
This movie certainly proved contrary to my pre concieved perceptions. Instead of a full blown Sci Fi, it was more of a simple love story with a Sci Fi backdrop. What you get from the Sci Fi side of things is giand squid like creatures making themselves home on earth and the US army trying to quarantine, then destroy them and killing innocent civilian lives while doing it. This is all portrayed subtley by showing quick snippets of protests in Mexico and the aftermath of an airstrike leaving neighbourhoods completely destroyed. You hear the TV mainly in the background gives the impression of the media keeping the bewildered public fearful. All these aspects work well as they do reflect real life situations.
The romance side of it is for me the movies downfall. This was supposed to be the heart of the movie, but I personally found it predictable and generic!
