Review of Monsters (2010) by Pete L — 08 Aug 2011
"I'm going to be a meteorologist, because it's the only job where I can be wrong every day, and not get fired.".
The low budget Scifi/Drama film that took the independant film industry by storm is just as good as it was hyped up to be.
Plot: Six years ago, a NASA probe carrying samples of alien life burned up in the atmosphere over Mexico. Before long, new life forms began to appear. A large part of Mexico was quarantined off which became known as the INFECTED ZONE. Now as the U.S. and Mexican military try to keep the octopus-like creatures contained, a photojournalist must escort his boss's daughter through the INFECTED ZONE to safety at the U.S. boarder.
This is like a low budget District 9 and almost as good. Director Gareth Edwards really knows how to handle a budget. It seems that every penny went to good use. I thought it was neat how there were only two actors, while everyone else were people that just happened to be where the small film crew was shooting. The effects look pretty good seeing as they were all done by the director on his computer. Most if not all of the dialogue was improvised on the spot, which gives it a very real feeling. As for the acting, I've seen Scoot McNairy in a few commercials and music videos and this movie just shows that he has the talent to become a big actor. I've never heard of Whitney Able before but I thought she did pretty good. After seeing this, I'm very eager see what Gareth Edwards will do next and I wouldn't mind seeing a bigger budget sequel, but maybe they should just do it low budget, because it gives it a very real feeling. Total Score: 7.8/10.
