Review of Monsters (2010) by Nat S — 25 Aug 2011
A brilliant film and auspicious directorial debut from Gareth Edwards, Monsters is a criminally underrated project. The film balances tropes from science fiction, romance, road movie, and the burgeoning immigration film with an engrossing ease.
The likeable cast have definite chemistry, the score is beautifully unobtrusive, and the visual impact of the impressive CGI is matched by that of the gorgeous natural settings of the film. Its exploration of the obvious allegory of illegal immigration is handled subtly and with more tact than one would initially expect.
All in all, I loved this film and wish that other people would recognize its unique genius.
