Review of Monsters (2010) by Julian T — 04 Jan 2012
While this is an interesting film, it was most certainly not what I was expecting. It is certainly a well conceived and put together film, and gets alot out of a miniscule budget. Of course a budget the size of this films will inevitably become a burden on a sci-fi thriller about giant aliens.
My major problem with this is its lack of a defined genre. It is aimed to attract sci-fi/horror/thriller goers, but ends up being a slow paced, minimalistic character piece with a romance angle. I don't mind that, but I'd be willing to bet that 90% of people that go to see a movie called 'Monsters' about giant aliens left disappointed, as there is painfully little action and painfully few monsters.
The film revolves around two characters who are very capably acted, but again, they are counted on to carry the entire production. When the aliens are utilized, they are quite nifty. Original and unique creature design for sure, which makes it even more disappointing that they are so under used.
Alot of symbolism as far as illegal alien immigration and customs policies which aren't particularly subtle, but poignant none the less. The script is minimal but solid, and the score reflects this. Very solidly filmed and put together which really works to make an ultra cheap film really pop.
When all is said and done, this is a mediocre movie that suffers alot from not giving the audience what they want. What it does is done well, but it just isn't what people want to see. Interesting point of view on the genre, but it can't elevate itself past just 'ok'.
