Review of Monsters (2010) by Dc E — 07 Feb 2012
"Monsters" 10 Scale Rating: 6.0 (Above Average) ...
I hadn't heard of this movie until a few weeks ago when I saw it on someone's Top 10 of 2010 list. Once I read what it was about I simply HAD to see it. Unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to expectations. Not a bad movie, but disappointing.
After discovering that there might be alien life outside of our solar system, earth sends a probe to investigate. The probe returns and crash lands in Mexico, bringing large and destructive amphibian life forms. The upper half of Mexico is now called the "infected zone" where the monsters are kept at bay. A photographer is ordered by his high powered boss to get his daughter out of Central America and back home to the United States. After losing their passports, the two must traverse the "infected zone" instead of going through the Gulf of Mexico by boat.
For the first hour of this movie, nothing really happens. I understand build up and character development, but even with that extra time given to those elements, you still don't care about the characters much and wonder when you're going to see more monsters.
Like I said, it wasn't a bad movie and when it finally gets going, it becomes very interesting. The hour of filler that starts the film along with a less than stellar ending ruin it though.
