Review of Monsters (2010) by Charlie S — 13 Aug 2012
When you watch Monsters, it's hard to imagine that for most of the shoot, the production crew was comprised of seven people in a van. Furthermore, all of the visual effects were done by the director on pro-sumer programs.
From a solely filmmaking point of view, it's an incredible accomplishment. The film itself is very compelling. It has solid acting, an awesome premise, and it touches upon some deep themes. The script was mostly improvised, so it spreads itself out over a few core ideas.
Because of this, it loses the big emotional punch it could have had if it had concentrated on one big theme. Nevertheless, Monsters is a surprisingly entertaining film.
