Review of Monsters (2010) by Conner . — 03 Aug 2013
"Monsters" has a decent idea, but it does not do anything special with it. It ends up being "The African Queen" meets the aliens from "Skyline" and it's not nearly as interesting as one would think. The characters are bland and insignificant, which causes the film to trudge along giving the audience the craving for the aliens to appear. Unfortunately for them they rarely show up and the aliens look silly, not by budget, but design. They resemble enlarged octopi that move on land.
What "Monsters" lacks greatly is suspense, perhaps the most important element for its genre. While the two main characters travel to the United States, I never got a sense of danger. Although I respect the political issues it touches on, the intent feels more like a prop and less of the film's focus. In order to emphasize the point, "Monsters" should not have taken the spotlight away from the aliens and given it to two easily forgettable characters that develop a forced and unrealistic romance.
4.4/10.0.
