Review of Monsters (2010) by Marnie Z — 17 May 2014
(53%).
With a budget of around $500.000 (which as it happens is the total cost to carry around Michael Bay's ego during the shooting of each of his movies) this is quite an accomplishment, as even though the "monsters" are hardly on screen, the sense of scale is vast. And it really does beg the question, why do the studio's feel the need to spend considerably more, and where does it all go, and is it really necessary? The movie itself is a somewhat gentle paced adventure as the two leads battle to get where they are going as well as take in the beauty and danger going on around them. I've heard mutterings about both the cast and the script, and in all honesty for a movie such as this, and with a budget as small as this, they both hold up perfectly well, as at least it feels like a human being was behind what was said, rather than a committee, or a meddling Hollywood producer. Overall it's not perfect, but I'd rather watch this on a loop over Transformers 2 any day.
