Review of Monsters (2010) by James R — 02 Jul 2014
Right off the bat don't expect Monsters to be a film about crazy ass Godzilla like creatures fighting and massive destruction. Director Gareth Edwards (Godzilla and the upcoming Star Wars spinoff) brings a movie about the relationship between a journalist named Andrew (Scoot McNairy) when he has to escort his boss' daughter Samantha (Whitney Able) through the infected zone of Mexico back to the US.
The movie takes place in the near future where giant monsters have taken over most of Mexico after a satellite holding samples of sentient life crashed over Central America. The movie itself goes a bit slow and doesn't have much action if any.
I still really enjoyed it though. Andrew and Samantha are both people that have responsibilities and problems back in the US. They aren't perfect people, but they soon connect in a way that no one else in a situation would have been able to.
The movie has some beautiful locations and the leads sell the film. The movie was shot on a budget of around $500,000 this is incredible what they were able to do. There are times when the budget does show (graphics and backdrops), but it never took me out of the film.
I would say take a look at the trailer and remember that it's more of a character piece on two people in a really weird area of life. I recommend checking it out!
